Chris Flaherty received his M.S.W. from the University
of Denver (1992), and his doctorate in
social work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
(2001). His current research and publications focus on child welfare and family
violence. His curriculum vitae is available at: http://www.uky.edu/SocialWork/faculty/pages/flaherty.htm
Chris’s long-term goal is to maximize coordinated interdisciplinary research
and practice directed toward improving the lives of endangered and vulnerable
children. He serves as a member of the University’s non-medical institutional
review board, and is on the board of directors for Sunflower Kids, a non-profit
agency that provides supervised child visitation for family court cases
involving family violence. Chris has presented research at national and
international conferences. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in
social work research.
Prior to joining the University
of Kentucky’s College of Social Work,
Chris worked for twenty years in the U.S. Air Force mental health and social
services systems. His military practice experience includes mental health,
child and family violence intervention, prison-based treatment, and
post-graduate medical education in primary healthcare.
Pretenure faculty who are raising children were
surveyed regarding perceptions of collegial and supervisor support for
balancing work and parenting roles (n = 119).
Men report higher levels of collegial support, but not supervisor
support. Support predicts optimism
regarding tenure. Implications for
attracting and retaining faculty members are discussed.
