Dr. Debbie K. Mercer is the Dean of the College of Education and Technology at Fort Hays State University. She holds bachelors, master, and doctoral degrees in education. She served Kansas public schools as an elementary teacher and library media specialist. Specific areas of interest and expertise include teacher preparation, teacher effectiveness, children’s literature, and the use of technology. Mercer has served as the coordinator of the accreditation process for the unit, on numerous accreditation visits, and state program reviews.

In our quest for authentic performance assessment of our teacher education candidates, our institution embarked on a journey to develop effective tools. This article highlights the portfolio segment of our trip. While not a straight path, we have reflected and learned with each turn. We have arrived at a place that we feel provides our education unit with rich data regarding the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of our candidates.
