Derrick Dwayne Davis is an Associate Professor and Program Lead in the Graduate School of Educational Administration at the Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama. Davis has a PhD in Educational Administration from Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a MEd from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a BS degree from Alabama A&M University. Presently, Davis is attending law school at Birmingham School of Law and holds two state specialized certifications to teach School Law and School Finance by the Alabama State Department of Education.

Davis has chaired several master level thesis committees and serves on the following internal committees at Alabama A&M University: administration advisory committee, administration/organization handbook committee, dean’s advisory committee, grant proposal committee, and the scholarship committee.

Presently, he is a member of the Alabama Association of Professors of Educational Leadership (AAPEL), the Education Law Association and serves as a Board Member for “Raised by the Village.”

Davis has headed and coordinated numerous Educational seminars and has participated in the most notable Executive Leadership Summit hosted by Hampton University in Virginia. Further, he was recommended and completed training to become one of the states Board of Examiners for the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Alabama Department of Education. Equally important, Davis completed the Alabama Education Law Program which was sanctioned and approved by Governor Bob Riley in 2003. And, to name a few, Davis has served as presenter for the Data Driven School Improvement Seminar for the University of Alabama and Alabama A&M University, and has conducted numerous School Law presentations both at his present university and throughout the state of Alabama.

Publications

Davis’s publishing and presentation efforts have largely been focused on School Law topics and school evaluation.

Circumventing the “Wow Factor”: Pitfalls and Recommendations When Infusing New Technologies

Adopting a sense of skepticism when assessing new technologies for full scale adoption within ones education setting helps decision makers to counter that spellbound feeling one gets when assessing new technologies with all their “bells and whistles”—the “wow factor.”   In the article, Circumventing the “Wow Factor”:   Pitfalls and Recommendations When Infusing New Technologies, the author provides educational leaders with practical advice and guidance when faced with the task of selecting and implementing new technologies.   Common pitfalls and recommendations include avoiding the “Wow Factor,” challenging or confirming data reports provided by marketers and showcased in slick brochures, developing a healthy sense of skepticism during the process,  involving institutional technologist (upfront) prior to decisions being reached, developing a Technology Plan that is inclusive of all stakeholders, securing ground support (especially from those most affected by the change), and providing essential training experiences for faculty and staff.
