Earl Emanuel Thomas EdD is assistant professor in the School of Education at Saint Xavier University, Chicago Illinois. His research interests include teacher practices, diversity, and faculty in higher education. His recent publications include “Collaboration: An alternative for mentoring new faculty” (Journal of Adventist Education 2008), “The adult learner: Here to stay” (Black Issues in Higher Education 2005). “Minimizing barriers in teacher diversity professional development”(Association of Teacher Educator Yearbook 2008).

A Mentoring Process to Support Teachers’ Growth and Retention

Schools have consistently struggled with the issues of retention of teachers. Over the next decade American schools will need to hire nearly 200,000 teachers to support increased student enrollment. Despite this staggering statistic teacher mentoring programs are often not part of the school system. Thus, new teachers are often left with no support system that ensures their success and retention. This article introduces a mentoring process that supports teachers’ growth and retention embedded in a systematic planned approach.
