Future academic leaders must be as knowledgeable about fiscal management strategies as they are about developing and sustaining strong academic programs. Financial and academic quality issues are now so interrelated that they must be addressed jointly. The authors, who have extensive experience in academic administration, identify several “macro strategies” that academic leaders can employ to support academic priorities in an era when resources are inadequate to meet all needs. They then present a number of “micro strategies” that can be used alone, in combination or as part of a “macro strategy” approach to reduce or contain costs in order to support academic quality.
