Mark contributes to the strategic leadership and provides operational oversight for the College’s academic programs and administrative services. Additionally, as the Executive Director of the Center for Leadership, Technology, and Professional Development, he designs, manages, and delivers corporate training and organizational improvement programs and services for the region’s business and professional community. Prior to assuming this position, he completed a one-year assignment as a full-time member of the Business Administration faculty at the university where he taught undergraduate courses on management and organizational behavior and a graduate course entitled Leadership for the 21st Century. Additionally, he recently developed a graduate online leadership course for Norwich University’s Master of Science in Organizational Leadership. His research and writing interests include leadership and leadership development, executive coaching, and change management. Prior to joining the UMW faculty, Mark served as a Senior Consultant/State Training Manager with the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management’s Office of Human Resources and Organization Development. In this capacity, he designed and delivered agency-specific process improvement, workforce development and human resource transformation programs and services to executives, managers and human resource professionals. Additionally, he led an agency team in the design, execution and management of a major training outsourcing initiative that brought 46 vendors and more than 125 training programs to the Commonwealth and served as Senior Faculty member with the Commonwealth's leadership development institutes.
Previously, Mark was the Director of Hay Management Consultants' Training and Human Resource Development Directorate in the firm’s Arlington, Virginia Office. In this capacity, he designed and managed client projects that applied human resource development expertise to organizational improvement programs. Prior to joining Hay, he was an Assistant Professor at The George Washington University School of Education and Human Development where he taught in the graduate Human Resource Development Program and served as Program Advisor for students enrolled through the University's Hampton Roads Center. His previous professional experiences include serving as an HRD consultant in private practice, serving as the Assistant Training Manager for Programs with the Virginia Department of Corrections' Academy for Staff Development, directing a graduate health management program, directing a community hospital education and training department, and serving in both administrative and instructional capacities with the Miami-Dade County (Florida) Public Schools. Mark’s former academic appointments include George Washington University's School of Education and School of Business and Public Management, Marymount University's School of Business Administration, and the University of Virginia's Division of Continuing Education. He has regularly served as a consultant to The U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Federal Executive Institute for almost 20 years; has provided training, consultation, and analytical services as a senior associate of DWB and Associates, a Virginia consultancy specializing in assisting public and private sector organizations improve organizational performance; and held a two-term appointment as a U. S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award Program for Virginia Examiner.
Mark completed his Bachelor's and Master's of Education at the University of Miami, his Ph.D. at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and his MBA at UMW’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies. He is qualified to administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (mbti) as well as several highly-respected multi-rater leadership and organizational assessment tools.
Mark and his wife Sharon live in Stafford, Virginia; their eldest son Todd (age 31), daughter-in-law Rachel, and daughter Heather (age 23) live and work in Washington, DC and their son Chad (age 28) lives and works in western North Carolina.
