Matthew Glavach, Ph.D., a teacher, a researcher, and a writer, has
authored and coauthored over 30 educational programs, including High
Interest Teaching Systems, HITS, a popular music based reading program
for older struggling readers, and Reading with Donny and Marie Osmond,
an original music based reading program for younger readers, and
research articles, including “Breaking the Failure Pattern” and
“Teaching the Unteachables.” Dr. Glavach’s recent research has resulted
in the Core Reading program that short-circuits the reading
intervention process for older struggling readers. In 2005, Dr.
Glavach's reading program was among programs chosen by the National
Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NICHD, for a possible
visit by First Lady Laura Bush. With his Northern California company
Glavach and Associates, Dr. Glavach is committed to improving middle
school and high school student literacy.

Closing the Gap: A New Model for Adolescent Reading Intervention is a research study using a new approach to connect middle and high school students who struggle to read to core textbooks and to increase reading skills, and self esteem. The study describes the instructional design, which organized words from core science, social studies, English, and mathematics textbooks into difficulty levels based on identical morphological patterns. Few reading intervention programs focus on teaching multisyllable words to middle and high school students who struggle to read, and the program developed during the study may be the only program using words taken directly from core textbooks and organized into a reading intervention program specifically for middle and high school students.
