Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the Chinese master teachers’ perceptions of their principals’ leadership capacities. One hundred and seventy three teachers from Guangdong Province completed the Principal Leadership Capacities Questionnaire. The results of the study indicated that principals’ leadership capacities were generally perceived moderately negative. Internal leadership capacities in school vision, instruction, and organization were perceived lower than external leadership capacities in collaborative partnership, moral perspective, and larger-context politics. Principals with higher academic degrees were perceived to have higher internal and external leadership capacities. Causes of these results were analyzed from both angles of practice and culture. Improvements in designing training programs and adjusting principalship policies were recommended. This study contributes its results to the body of school leadership literature from the Chinese cultural perspective.
