Abstract

This study investigates chairs’ perceptions of their roles in large research universities.  The study was particularly focused on how chairs defined their roles and responsibilities, what experiences they perceived as exhilarating, and what experiences they considered particularly frustrating.  Based on these results, several practical recommendations are developed for improving the lives of chairpersons by addressing leadership excellence and chair development.
