Dr. Deryl Leaming founded the Academic Leadership Online Journal in October, 2001, for the purpose of giving a state, regional, national, and international voice to scholars working in all fields that academic leadership addresses. Dr. Leaming, Fort Hays State University alumnus, knew that quality research and scholarly activities of professionals in the academic field was advancing the research base of academic leadership and that a professional forum must be initiated in which research and scholarship could be highlighted for the good of the academic profession and those the profession serves.

About this Journal

The online Journal of Academic Leadership is aimed at those in the academic world who care about leadership issues. We will provide a vast array of articles and essays that speak to the major issues of leadership faced by those in leadership roles – from unit coordinators to university presidents.

We plan to take advantage of the power of the latest technology to bring useful information to academic leaders and - for that matter - all those who care about the study of leadership. More than two decades have passed since James MacGregor Burns wrote in his much-heralded book, Leadership, about the crisis of leadership. He said then: "The crisis of leadership today is the mediocrity or irresponsibility of so many of the men and women in power, but leadership rarely rises to the full need for it."

Burns was not speaking specifically of academics, although we contend that much of what he said then rings true today about academic leadership. "If we know all too much about our leaders, we know far too little about leadership." The Journal of Academic Leadership intends to add to the body of knowledge about the important matter of leadership.

We welcome your ideas, comments, criticisms and submissions.
