The primary goal of ALJ is to advance the knowedge base of the field. You might be asking yourself why "leadership" is in our title. My answer to that is we are all leaders within our given job description. Taking the lead to advance the field is an obligation we all should accept.
The Academic Leadership Journal wants you to submit your writing. We are here to help you be successful. Our publishing process goes something like this:
- We may accept your article outright.
- If not, we may accept your article with revisions.
- Always revise and resubmit your article.
- We do reject articles, but only after trying to help you become successful.
- You are always free to call me (785-628-4547) or drop me an email (kdale@fhsu.edu)
The following lists resources and writing tips that will be helpful in being a successful writier.
1. Purdue University hosts a writing lab that will give you assistance in writing for a variety of content areas.

2. Kenneth T. Henson's advice in
Writing for Publication: A Controlled Art, Phi Delta Kappan (June, 2005), pages 772-776+
Why manuscripts are rejected:
- does not push the field
- lacks data
- fails to substantiate claims
Henson's Tips to Writers:
- do not fear rejection--it is part of the writing process
- do not be preoccupied with telling readers everything you know--instead help readers discover insights
- target your articles to journals that have an acceptance rate of at least 20%
- do not be afraid to call the editor of the journal
- stay within the preferred article length of the target journal
- write what you have to say and then edit your manuscript several times, eliminating everything that's unnecessary
- always say yes to rewriting parts of the manuscript if requested to do so
- avod jargon
- follow the journal's guidelines
- do not make technical and grammatical errors
3. Writing for publication advice from Priscilla L. Griffith at the University of Oklahoma, presentation (2008).
Pre-Writing questions to ask yourself:
- What is it yo want to say?
- Why is it important for olthers to know this?
- Wat makes it unique, interesting, and realistic?
- Who are you writing for?
- What do you want others to know?
Why manuscripts are rejected:
- You've written a term paper
- You included lists with no theoretical connection among the items
- You've written a manuscript that is more a book chapter than an article
Griffith's Tips for Writers:
Is the article well-written?
- tight convincing arguments
- immediately catches the reader
- cohesion both within and across paragraphs
- flows; has heading and sub-headings that help the reader
- discussion at the end makes the case for how questions were answered or problems resolved
- makes a case through an integration of manuscript content and existing theory for movingthe field forward
