A Transfermatery Phase In The History And Progress Of Ezhava Education

Ezhava are a branch of a great and widespread race of people that occupies South Tinnevelly, Travancore and the Malabar cost as far as the Tulu country. In the far South costs they are known as Shanars, in Central Travancore as Ezhavas, from Quilon to Paravoor Chogans; in Malabar as far as Calicut they bare called Tiyyas. Ezhavas belonging to the highest division of the lowest classes. Poor but not paupers, rude and or lettered. In some respect in the position of the Ezhavas in the scale of castes in peculiar. They were not allowed to enter the Temples, the public Schools and Courts of Justice, The Ezhavas were strictly prohibited from entering the public Schools. These social customs made the lives of the Ezhava community in credibly pathetic. At the end of the 19th century a silent revolution was set with in the community by Sree Narayana Guru, Dr.Palpu and Kumaranasan. This inaugurated the process of resurrection, education through temples. He led them from darkness to light through education. It is a historical fact that Sree Narayana Guru launched his educational programme through temples. Dr.Palpu had got involved in many social activities. Ones such activity was to privately help students who were bright but unable to pursue their studies because of poverty. He also showed an enthusiasm to work incessantly for the emancipation of his own community and other downtrodden communities. Kumaranasan played a dynamic role. His voice and his call for figfht were listened to eagerly. Considered seriously and implemented speedily. He was everywhere in the press and on the platform and on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.
